Old Man’s Child - Herr Galder im Gespräch
What are the pros and cons of working almost alone?
The good thing is that you can do whatever you feel like I suppose and you don’t have to compromise your work, the bad thing is that it’s easier to make a song interesting and „fresh“ if there’s more people involved, but yeah its definetly pros and cons working like this, but I like it, I’ve always worked like this so it’s what I do best.
How do you present Old Man’s Child live on stage? You cannot do everything yourself there.
Hehe, no that would be strange I suppose, when I do play live I just hire some good musicians and take it from there, we haven’t done any shows in a few years now so I haven’t really been thinking about it too much, but if I decide to go on a tour I’m sure it wouldn’t be a problem.
Are you going to work wir Reno Killerich again? He did an amazing job on „Vermin“.
Yeah I liked his playing so if he wants to he can play on my next album as well, he’s a very versatile drummer so he’s perfect for O.M.C.
Do you see Old Man’s Child as your main or a side project?
I take it just as serious as dimmu, I’ve had this band for twelve years now so I have em feelings for O.M.C. and I have never seen it as a project just as a „band“, I spend many hours a year making riffs and songs so calling it a project definetly would be wrong.
What kind of equipment do you use for the „Old Man’s Child-Sound“ in the studio and on stage?
I’ve used everything from metal zone distortion pedals to marshal and engl amps, which I used on „Vermin“ so I have never used the same equipment twice I believe, however guitar wise I’ve always used Jacksons since I was a kid. I have a new sponsor deal with ESP now though so that will be my new guitars from now on.
How much influence do you have on the sound of Dimmu Borgir?
Quite much I believe, there’s a big difference on the albums I have played on from the old stuff so I suppose I have had some influence there.
Isn’t it strange for you to „only“ play the guitar for Dimmu Borgir and not having the control over the whole sound and arrangements?
No it’s good, of course everyone has different ideas but that’s what makes it interesting, and the band is open minded so if there’s something some one like or not like we will say it and we’ll just take it from there, and the majority rules.
Which bands or artists had the greatest influence on you and your music?
I can’t really say it was any of the „Modern“ extreme black/death metal bands because there wasn’t any bands like that when I first was hooked on metal, so probably bands like Wasp, Slayer, Motley crue, metallica, Anthrax etc, and after that I started to listen a lot to old death metal and then eventually black metal.
Is Black Metal your lifestyle or more something like your daily business?
Yeah its definetly a life style but I wouldn’t say just black metal, metal in general has been a life style for me for many years mostly the more extreme aspects of it of course but it has for sure played a big part of my life, and the way I think today.
As you know there are some people within the Black Metal Scene who think, that BM should stay underground like it was in Norway in the early 90s. These Days this kind of scene is mainly located in Poland. What do you think about this „underground-spirit“ and are you often confronted with people who accuse you to sell out BM (e.g with Dimmu Borgir)? (Chaoz)
Yeah I know everything about that, but why should it matter as long as you stay true to yourself and not compomise your music, I have never ever made a riff/song with the intention of making a song that will sell! So that’s just bull shit, and also most of these persons that say stuff like this, by the time that they are 40 years old they’re probably married with kids and have forgotten all about their so called black metal roots while we continue playing blast beats and sing about Satan. so who’s the most true then?
What can we expect next from Old Man’s Child and Galder?
I have already some ideas ready so hopefully the next album wont take as long time as this one did, and maybe since this album was a bit slow and atmospheric I might have to speed it up a bit, but we’ll see. Not sure how it will be with tours but it’s been a while since we played so that is also something I will consider for the next album.
Thanks for the interview
Galder
